When the family caregiver needs a break

Respite care in Berlin — we step in when you need time off.

Family caregivers occasionally need a break — for illness, holiday, or simply to recharge. Respite care (Verhinderungspflege) under § 39 SGB XI ensures that care continues during this time. DSK+ checks your entitlement, provides substitute care at home and bills your care insurance directly.

What respite care is

A substitute caregiver – with no gap in care

Who is entitled

Entitlement to respite care exists from care level 2, provided the person in need of care has been looked after at home by a private caregiver — usually a family member — for at least six months. If that person is temporarily unavailable, a substitute carer takes over.

What the care insurance covers

Your care insurance covers an annual amount for respite care per calendar year. We bill this directly with the insurer and tell you in advance exactly what you're entitled to — you don't need to pay upfront.

Combination with short-term care

Respite care can be combined with unused funds from short-term care, and vice versa. In many cases this increases the total amount available for the year. We work out with you what's possible in your situation.

Frequently asked questions

Your questions – our answers

From which care level is respite care available?

Respite care is available to people with care level 2 or higher. It also requires that the person in need of care has been cared for at home by a private caregiver, such as a family member, for at least six months.

How much does the care insurance cover?

Your care insurance covers an annual amount for respite care per calendar year. The exact amount depends on your care level and any unused funds from short-term care. We check this for you and tell you in advance exactly what you are entitled to.

Can respite care be combined with short-term care?

Yes. Unused funds from short-term care can also be used for respite care, and vice versa. This can increase the annual amount available in many cases. We work this out for your specific situation.

How does the application process work?

You don't have to handle anything on your own: DSK+ checks your entitlement, provides the substitute care at home, and bills the costs directly with your care insurance.

How quickly can respite care start?

Please contact us as early as possible so we can arrange schedules and responsibilities. In case of a sudden absence of the caregiver, for example due to illness, we try to organise a short-notice solution — just get in touch with us directly.
